Embrace the Season of Change With These Cozy Home Tips

By Jordyn Windnagle - September 16, 2026

As autumn settles in, it’s the perfect time to turn over a new leaf and make our homes feel warmer and more welcoming. These simple seasonal touches will help you prepare for the colder days ahead by creating a cozy space you’ll love coming home to.

DECLUTTER
The act of cleaning may not be a destressor for everyone, but it’s important to start with a clean, fresh base during a time when you’ll be indoors more often. This is especially true if you plan to decorate for the season. Having more clutter than normal can easily become overwhelming rather than cozy. Your future self will thank you for the extra room!

BLANKETS, BLANKETS & MORE BLANKETS
In our opinion, you can never have too many blankets. Store them in attractive woven baskets or on a rustic blanket ladder. This is also a simple way to incorporate various textiles. You can drape a chunky cable knit over the back of your couch, use wool over bed linens, display grandma’s quilt, and have faux furs or velvet throws throughout—whatever cozy materials you have for layering.

INCORPORATE FALL COLORS
You certainly don’t need to rework your entire color palette for fall. Find ways to add pops of rich tones that work with your existing design. Shades of deep green, brown, aubergine, and rust are excellent autumnal colors. Throw pillows, bedding, towels, and (of course) blankets are an easy option to switch things up.

CHOOSE FLATTERING LIGHT
With less exposure to daylight, you may get the urge to make your home as bright as possible. However, harsh unnatural lighting can be equally as jarring as prolonged darkness. Instead of relying on overhead lights that flood the room, try to generate several points of illumination at varying heights. Your room will have more depth and a cozy glow when the lighting is layered with table lamps, floor lamps, sconces, and candles.

CREATE WOODLAND WHIMSY
Bring the outdoors inside! Create unique displays by collecting tree branches, pinecones, acorns, and cut flowers. Make sure to inspect for bugs first. These items will last longer with a clear coat or hairspray. Not only is this a free way to decorate, but it keeps you connected to nature which can help you feel less cooped up.

SHOW OFF YOUR BOUNTY
It’s the harvest season, after all, so why not let the produce take center stage in your kitchen? Rather than tucking your fruits, veggies, and herbs out of sight, find decorative baskets or hanging displays to show off your bounty. Showcasing these colorful ingredients will bring warmth, texture, and the spirit of gathering for a feast.

ENGAGE YOUR SENSE OF SCENT
Few things make a home feel more hospitable than the comforting scents of fall. Fill your space with seasonal aromas like cinnamon, apple, vanilla, clove, or pumpkin through scented candles, wax melts, essential oil diffusers, or a simmer pot on the stove. The waft of a delightful fragrance can instantly relieve tension and have you ready to curl up on the couch with a good book.

SET THE STAGE WITH CURB APPEAL
We’ve focused a lot on the inside of your home since that’s where you’ll be spending most of your time, but don’t ignore the outside! You don’t have to go all out if that’s not your thing, but a little pop of fall in your curb appeal will make your home pleasantly inviting from the moment you pull up. Something as simple as a cute doormat, potted mums, and a seasonal wreath can help set the stage of coziness.

Let your home follow suit with the changing season. A few simple, nature-inspired touches can add the dimension and warmth that so many of us crave this time of year. We hope these ideas help you breathe new life into your space!
